Efficient public transport systems require well-trained professionals with the skills and expertise to manage modern operations. In a bid to create a reliable public transport system in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (NMA), the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) has launched a robust capacity-building program.
Developing Skills for Sustainable Transport Planning
The capacity-building initiative commenced with a comprehensive module on transport planning from March 28th to 31st, 2023. The training, organized by NaMATA in collaboration with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), was supported by the European Union (EU) under the Institutional Support for the Kenyan Transport Sector (ISKTS) program. This initiative aimed to enhance technical knowledge essential for public transport operations.
The training focused on sustainable transport planning for the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), including the development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors. Participants evaluated designs and progress on the BRT lines, assessing gaps in design standards and proposing improvements to align with international standards.
Collaboration Across Key Transport Stakeholders
The success of the program was marked by the active participation of over 40 technical staff and stakeholders from key organizations, including:
- Nairobi Metropolitan Area Counties’ technical teams
- Federation of Public Transport Sector (FPTS)
- State Department of Transport and Roads technical staff
- National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)
- Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA)
- Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA)
- Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK)
- Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC)
This collaboration ensured a holistic approach to addressing transport challenges in the region, fostering integration across the five BRT corridors for seamless operations.
Strengthening the Future of Public Transport in Nairobi
The four-day training concluded with certifications for all participants, signaling their readiness to implement what they learned. Looking ahead, NaMATA has outlined plans for additional training modules focusing on:
- E-Mobility and low-emission vehicles
- BRT operations and management
These future sessions aim to equip stakeholders with the skills needed to adapt to evolving transportation demands and environmental considerations.
A Milestone Toward Modern Public Transport
NaMATA’s capacity-building efforts reflect its commitment to creating a safe, reliable, and sustainable public transport system for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. By prioritizing skills development and fostering collaboration, the program lays the groundwork for a transport network that meets the needs of a growing urban population.
